History/Social Studies

We continued to read about the tyranny of King James and how the pilgrims tried to get to Holland.

Science HOD

We learned how light goes through some things and other things block light.  We used several different items to test: dark construction paper, cling wrap, tin foil, tissue paper…

Science Zoology

Big Sis’ notebooking

 

Bubba’s notebooking and Tadpole’s notebooking.

We learned more interesting facts about birds and using our field guides.  We learned a lot about how to tell the differences in birds and how to find out if a bird would be seen in our area and what time of year they would be in our area.

Math

 

This is Bubba’s circa 1980’s Abeka Math book.  I was able to find the teacher’s curriculum plans on ebay!  He switched from Singapore Math this week.

I bought these concept flash cards at the School Aids store to use with our Abeka math.  Abeka’s flash cards are a bit pricey.

Here is Bubba working on the “board” problems.  He copies them on his little dry erase board from my mounted dry erase board.

The girls are adjusting to the change to R&S Math.  It is going alright.  Our biggest challenge is copying the problems into a notebook.  I will try to update more about their math next week.

Language Arts

HOD Story time-We are finishing up Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin.  It is an interesting read and the kids are all enjoying it.

This week we are reading/read:

2nd grade-Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik

4th grade-Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

5th grade-Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder

This should be our last week reading Farmer Boy with my 5th grader. 

We are beginning Twenty-One Balloons by William Pene du Bois for story time next.

GUM Grammar is going well.  They have learned more about prepositional phrases, independent clauses, and compound sentences this week.

The girls are both working through Wordly Wise A, B, and C this year. 

 

We put our youngest son, Wiggles, in day school this week.  He is loving it and it fits the season of our lives right now.    We knew the director as she was Big Sis’ k-4 preschool teacher.  I am better able to accomplish everything with the big kids while he has his 3 hours of day school with kids his age.
