This is the tentative high school plans for my dd13 and dd12 who are currently 9th and 8th grade respectively. The High School plan for 9-12 is based on dd13’s high school path.
Personal Plan-High School Coursework
9th Grade (10th-12th follows below in this post)
| 9th Grade | Credits |
| Bible: Religion 1 | 1 |
| English: English 1-Literary Analysis and Composition | 1 |
| History: American History 1 | 1 |
| Government | 1/2 |
| Math: Mathematics 1-Algebra/Geometry/Statistics | 1 |
| Science: Physical Science | 1 |
| Foreign Language: German 1 | 1 |
| Electives: Theater Arts | 1/2 |
| Music | 1/2 |
| PE-Archery | 1 |
I have been planning a lot for high school. We will be using HOD’s Revival to Revolution for our 8th/9th grade year for the girls respectively. My 8th grader will receive high school credits the same as her 9th grade sibling.
American History, Government (using the Civics text below and the Federalist Papers), and Religion will come from HOD’s Revival to Revolution. We will use the economy package only. We will not be adding the basic package for storytime and will use our own science, math, and language arts/literature.

Instead of using the extensions from HOD, we will use the free resource CK-12 US History Sourcebook Advanced K12’s American Odyssey and Glencoe’s Civics Today: Civics, Economics and You for Government and Free Enterprise credits.

dd12 will not be participating in the high school history/government/economics. Here it is typical to only be able to credit 2-3 high school credits from 8th grade. Normally in math, science, and foreign language.
Reason for not using HOD’s extensions for 8th and 9th grade
For our needs, HOD’s extensions would not achieve our high school requirements for a college prep track. With high school, it is very important to research with your anticipated college institutions and be aware of the best path for your student’s goals.
Science will come from MFW (My Father’s World) using their lesson plans for Apologia. Physical Science is the norm for 9th grade here. We are not following HOD’s science. My oldest was already in high school courses with k12. I like the setup and ability to re-use Apologia as well as the economy priced lab kits from Home Science Tools.

Reason for not going with HOD Science
For our needs, HOD’s science would not achieve our high school requirements for a medical science/college prep track. I am sure it meets minimum high school diploma requirements though and fits most students that do not know their future plans or do not plan a major with heavy math or science requirements. With high school, it is very important to research with your anticipated college institutions and be aware of the best path for your student’s goals.
We will be doing the inventor study from HOD Rev to Rev though.

dd12 will be participating in the high school science. Here it is typical to only be able to credit 2-3 high school credits from 8th grade. Normally in math, science, and foreign language.
Algebra 1 and Pre-Algebra will be completed using the books from our charter. They are halfway through these courses. We will switch to MFW’s Lesson plans for Saxon high school math after this year using the DIVE cd’s. for my 9th grader. My 8th grader will be finishing k12’s Pre-Algebra. I have again rethought maths. I am going to go with MEP Y9 for both girls. I am not wanting to do the traditional American math of focusing on Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2 each for a year. MEP integrates math and you cover the same thing to get 3 high school credits by completing Y9 and GCSE 1&2. MEP is free and I will just need to print what we need.
I am back to the original plan of MFW Algebra 1 for my 9th grader and finishing K12’s Pre-Algebra for my 8th grader. I found out Saxon 3rd edition is integrated maths. The Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Math sequence gives you your Algebra, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and Trig sequence.
We will probably utilize some of MEP’s lessons as well though. My main reason for not going totally MEP this year is that my 9th grader already has a 1/2 credit in Algebra 1 from charter school and felt that going with MEP would be forcing her to do summer school to get her 9th grade math credit when she has already achieved a 1/2 credit in Algebra 1.

dd12 will be participating in the high school math. Here it is typical to only be able to credit 2-3 high school credits from 8th grade. Normally in math, science, and foreign language.
English 1-Literary Analysis and Composition will come from a setup similar to HOD’s WG English setup for 9th. We will use Abeka’s Themes of Literature and CLP’s Applications of Grammar Book 3 as well as read the novels-Tom Sawyer, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Wind in the Willows, and Little Women. I will be purchasing the Abeka Lit and App. of Grammar from CLP and the novels from Christian book.com. This combination will give high school English credit.

My 8th grader will do the following-Abeka’s Of Places Lit., CLP’s Application of Grammar 2 and the novels-Anne of Green Gables, The Jungle Book, and Alice in Wonderland.

Reason for not going with HOD Language Arts/Literature
For our needs, HOD’s language arts would not achieve our high school requirements for a college prep track. With high school, it is very important to research with your anticipated college institutions and be aware of the best path for your student’s goals.
German is coming from Living Language. I found it on CLP as their recommendation for German credit. You only need purchase the complete as it has the essential, intermediate, and advanced levels included. Christian book.com carries living languages for almost any foreign language you might wish to take.

dd12 will be participating in the high school foreign language. She may start with Spanish first though. Here it is typical to only be able to credit 2-3 high school credits from 8th grade. Normally in math, science, and foreign language.
PE will come from Archery practice for 4H weekly. Also Theater Arts will come from our co-op. I should be able to add in Music 1 with the music appreciation alongside Music Ace and Piano lessons for the year. I am truly starting to get excited.
This will cover 9th grade for my 9th grader and potentially 9th grade for my 8th grader should we wish to graduate her early. We will use HOD’s guides for history, religion, and electives only. We will continue to use MFW’s lesson plans for science and math. We will also continue to purchase our literature/language arts using CLASS recommendations by CLP.
I like the idea of using a series for math and science instead of jumping through curricula publishers. MFW has 4 day schedules and grading kits for Apologia’s science and Saxon Math that will work well with HOD’s 4 day plans.
I am also using Homeschool Minder to keep all of our records. I am very pleased with it.

http://www.homeschoolminder.com/
Since my free trial expired with homeschool minder and it was online based. I have been hesitant to order it monthly or for the yearly….simply b/c if I am off with my nook I need internet access to use it. I had already had an app on my nook called homeschool helper that does not need internet access. It has all the features I need except transcript capability. I will probably purchase homeschool minder in the future, but for now I am using homeschool helper.
CREDIT RECOVERY
dd13 went to a charter school for 1/2 of 8th grade taking 9th grade credits. I do not want all that work to be for naught. Most of the credits she was working towards with the charter will be completed with the line-up for 9th grade. However, there are 2 subjects that just won’t fit in well. She will do credit recovery along the way to get the other 1/2 credit for these subjects.
- Earth Science
- State History
Earth Science 1/2 credit will come from a combo of Christian Kids Explore Earth, Earth Science Worktext and Science and CK-12 Earth Science for High School.

State History 1/2 credit will continue the text used by our charter-The Louisiana Journey.
The goal will be to complete Earth Science after Physical Science and before Biology. State History should be easily completed alongside Rev2Rev or MTMM. These two 1/2 credits may become summer school though and be worked back in between 9th and 10th grade.

English 2-World Literature/Composition will utilize Abeka’s World Literature with CLP teaching aids, Applications of Grammar book 4, and the novels: The Odyssey, Pilgrim’s Progress, Don Quixote, and King Lear.

German 2 will utilize Living Languages-German.
| 11th Grade | Credits |
| Bible: Religion 3 | 1 |

English 3-American Literature/Composition will utilize BJU’s American Literature with CLP teaching aids, Applications of Grammar book 5, and the novels: Moby Dick, Adventures of Huck Finn, The Scarlet Letter, and Portrait of a Lady.

Spanish 1 will come from Living Language-Spanish.
| 12th Grade | Credits |
| Bible: Religion 4 | 1 |
| English: English 4-English Literature/Composition | 1 |

| Math: Mathematics 4-Pre-Calculus-Trigonometry/Statistics | 1 |
| Science: Biology 2 | 1 |
| Foreign Language: Spanish 2 | 1 |
| Electives: Health | 1/2 |
This will be younger dd’s 11th grade year. She will participate in all areas.
World History, Religion, and Health will come from HOD’s World History. We will use the economy package only. We will not be adding the basic package for storytime and will use our own science, math, and language arts/literature.
Science will come from MFW (My Father’s World) using their lesson plans for Apologia. We will use home science tools lab kits.
Currently the plan is for Mathematics 4 to come from MEP’s A-Level Maths. However, the alternative plan since the A-levels have no teacher’s materials or worked solutions (only an answer key)…is to use Saxon’s Advanced Math which is comparable in scope and sequence to A-level MEP. Inevitably, this plan will have to be ironed out as we get closer to grade 12.

English 4-British Literature/Composition will utilize Abeka’s English Literature with CLP teaching aids, Applications of Grammar book 6, and the novels: Gulliver’s Travels, The Screwtape Letters, Great Expectations, and Pride and Prejudice.

Spanish 2 will come from Living Language-Spanish.
Younger dd will use HOD’s 3rd high school guide for her Senior year. At that time, I will evaluate her current transcript and determine what credits she still requires.

I really like your plan for high school. I'm curious about your choice for science as you picked Apologia rather than going with HOD's science. How is this year working our?
ReplyDeleteI never thought about explaining why we chose to go a different route for science, but plan to update the post to include our reasons. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome, my friend! You've been a busy little bee! I'm going to check out the "homeschool helper" app! And I added MEP Math to my favorites to look over later! Thanks for the thorough reviews/research!
ReplyDeleteAnd we school January to December so I will post around March with how our plan is panning out. :)
