K12’s 2nd grade spelling is atrocious. Literally, it is just lists and these few pages of suggestions for teaching the words weekly.
This is just an example of the 6 pages of suggestions for teaching spelling with the k12 lists. I have heard that they reformatted 3rd grade in the same manner instead of having a spelling workbook with crosswords, fill in the blanks, and more typical spelling exercise. My 2nd grader got tired of doing the same things from these 6 pages weekly and there was ZERO carry over to the test.

Lucky for me, we are using a nationally recognized curriculum and I was able to search for k12 LA2 and found all his lists pre-made in Spelling City. I have imported them and he is finally passing his spelling tests and I am not taking an hour to get the little activities that k12 suggests on the 6 pages in the back of the spelling text.
His favorites are missing letter, word unscramble, and word search. He really loves word search.
He then goes onto Day 4 of his k12 Spelling Unit and plays a game to type in the spelling words as they are called out to him. So far his spelling grades have improved 150%. He was bombing the spelling tests with k12’s methods. He is now acing the tests with K12 lists using spelling city.
There is a premium version for a cost that has even more ways to play and learn your spelling lists. Most name-brand publishers are already in lists created by other users and you can search for them.
My favorite thing about Spelling City is that it is user friendly for the kids. Once I have imported his list for the week and set him up, he can navigate to the games and even take pre-tests and post tests without me. Spelling is typically a parent-intensive subject with calling out lists and pre-tests and post-tests. Spelling City has really freed me up to continue working with his middle school siblings while he is still mastering his spelling.
